about dr. cavey
Dr. Matthew Cavey of Texas Radiotherapy in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Matthew Cavey is a board-certified radiation oncologist and has been in practice in North Texas since 2006. He has extensive experience in advanced radiation therapy treatments and has helped thousands of patients beat cancer. With over twenty years of experience, Dr. Cavey is an expert in several modalities of radiation therapy including brachytherapy, MR fusion transperineal biopsy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiosurgery (SBRT), stereotactic ablative radiation (SABR), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and others.

Dr. Cavey has a wealth of knowledge and experience in treating a wide variety of cases. Dr. Cavey is one of the few doctors in the DFW Metroplex who regularly performs prostate seed implants (brachytherapy), which are the gold standard of treatment for prostate cancer. He was the Medical Director of the Fort Worth CyberKnife Center for over a decade and has treated over 2,000 SRS and SBRT cases. In addition, Dr. Cavey now performs MR-guided radiosurgery, the next generation of prostate brachytherapy, which has been shown to deliver even higher quality treatments.

Texas Radiotherapy is a SpaceOAR hydrogel Center of Excellence. Dr. Cavey gained this recognition for his SpaceOAR hydrogel use and expertise. This gel is used during radiation and helps to protect sexual function and reduce rectal toxicity during prostate radiation. Dr. Cavey was the first physician in Tarrant County to be recognized as a Center of Excellence and certified for SpaceOAR use. He also trains other physicians on how to properly use SpaceOAR.

Dr. Cavey's
Expertise

Dr. Cavey’s expertise and experience in radiation oncology and care extends into these technologies and more.

MR fusion transperineal biopsies

Dr. Cavey is highly trained in advanced biopsies. He uses MR fusion transperineal biopsies to diagnose prostate cancer. These biopsies bypass the rectum, greatly reducing the risk of infection.

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is the gold standard for men who have prostate cancer. Dr. Cavey uses and prefers low-dose-rate brachytherapy. He places very small, safe, radioactive seeds that deliver targeted radiation directly to the tumor.

Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)

IMRT lets Dr. Cavey shape his radiation beams to match your tumor’s 3D dimensions. He uses a computer-controlled external radiation beam for this.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), body radiotherapy (SBRT), & ablative radiotherapy (SABR)

Dr. Cavey uses a high-precision radiation treatment that delivers optimal doses in one to five sessions over one to two weeks. Dr. Cavey picks the best approach for your cancer type and stage.

Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)

IGRT uses frequent imaging scans before or during your treatment to target only your tumor. This spares your healthy tissue.

Volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT)

Dr. Cavey uses volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), an advanced, high-precision form of external beam radiation.

Adaptive radiotherapy (ART)

Dr. Cavey uses adaptive radiotherapy. He combines high-quality imaging with AI (that he reads and interprets) to adjust your radiation plan before or during your visit.

TomoHelical

TomoHelical is a helical tomotherapy treatment. Dr. Cavey uses a linear accelerator to aim at a tumor from many different directions to maximize the patient’s outcome.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel

SpaceOAR hydrogel is a protective gel made by Boston Scientific that Dr. Cavey uses during prostate cancer treatments to help preserve bowel, bladder, and sexual function.

Every cancer patient has a unique set of circumstances. Dr. Cavey works with the patient’s medical oncologist, surgeon, and primary care physician to provide each individual an opportunity for a cure and the highest quality of life. Dr. Cavey has been extensively involved in clinical radiation oncology research, particularly in breast and prostate cancer. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at numerous national and international meetings. He was honored for his research efforts with an award from the Research and Education Foundation of the Radiological Society of North America.
